A Boy, a Mouse, and a Spider,The Story of E. B. White

A lyrical biography of E. B. White, beloved author of Charlotte's Web and Stuart Little, written by Barbara Herkert and illustrated by Caldecott honoree Lauren Castillo. When young Elwyn White lay in bed as a sickly child, a bold house mouse befriended him. When the time came for kindergarten, an anxious Elwyn longed for the farm, where animal friends awaited him at the end of each day. Propelled by his fascination with the outside world, he began to jot down his reflections in a journal. Writing filled him with joy, and words became his world. Today, Stuart Little and Charlotte?s Web are beloved classics of children?s literature, and E. B. White is recognized as one of the finest American writers of all time.A Christy Ottaviano Book

A DOGs TALE & THE STOLEN WHITE ELEPHANT – Two Short Stories

The two short animal stories in this book are written by Mark Twain. They are ?A Dogs Tale? and ?The Stolen White Elephant?. A DOGS TALE is told from the perspective of a loyal pet, starting with first sentence of the story, ?My father was a St. Bernard, my mother was a collie, but I?m a Presbyterian.? This is followed by a description of the life of the dog as a puppy and its separation from its mother. When a fire breaks out in the nursery, the dog risks his life to drag the child to safety. In the process, her are motives misunderstood and cruelly beaten. This mirrors the legend of Prince Llewellyn 1st of Wales and his loyal dog. Soon, however, the truth about the situation and she discovered endless praise. Later in history, his puppy dies after his owner conducted biological experiments. Only a servant seems to realize the irony and said, ?Poor little dog, you saved his child!? Ultimately, the dog is inconsolable and pines at the tomb of the puppy with clear implications that it will do so until death In THE STOLEN WHITE ELEPHANT, a detective mystery, a Siamese (Thai) white elephant, en route from Siam to Britain as a gift to Queen Victoria, breaks free and disappears in New Jersey. The local police department goes into high gear to solve the mystery. The elephant?s actions and movements are related in a number of telegrams sent by the detectives tracking the animal. The inspector becomes suspicious of the telegram?s content and tracks down the elephant himself, unfortunately with tragic consequences. ============ KEYWORDS/TAGS: fairy tales, Animal stories, childrens book, folklore, myths, legends, children?s stories, childrens stories, bygone era, ethereal, fairy land, classic stories, famous authors, Mark Twain, Samuel Clemens, children?s bedtime stories, childrens books, happy place, happiness, laughter, A dogs tale, The Stolen White Elephant, puppy, pine, loyal, loyalty, save, fire, rescue, scold, praise, ignore, White Elephant, enroute, India, England, Queen Victoria, New York, escape, break free, steal, hide, false, reports, investigate, actions,

Bohemian Grammar (Illustrated)

In preparing the present work it has been my aim to present to English speaking people a practical text book of the Bohemian language written along modern lines, explaining the grammatical principles and supplying enough exercises to illustrate them. As far as I am aware there are only two other books published on the same subject in English:?Chas. Jon?? ?Bohemian Made Easy? a book based on conversational method and Grammar of the Bohemian language by W. Morfill, a very brief work destined for philologists rather than general students. As Jon???s book is out of print, and, as there is quite a demand for a practical text book of Bohemian among businessmen and students?Bohemian is at present taught at several Universities and High Schools in the United States?this work was undertaken

Boys’ Book of Indian Warriors and Heroic Indian Women: Epic Tales of Native Americans on the Frontiers

There is nothing more inspiring or more tragic than the bloody and brave history of Native American warriors and the heroic deeds of the women who supported them. Fighting against incredible odds, hopelessly outnumbered and outgunned, and subjected to deadly diseases brought by hostile invaders, the Native Americans fought on almost to the last man, woman, and child. This book, put together by the late Edwin Sabin, gives a thorough yet readable account of the awesome feats of the great warrior leaders of the people that occupied and cultivated America thousands of years before the white man stumbled upon it by mistake. With illustrations of historical figures, Boys' Book of Indian Warriors?brings the past into the present as you read about the Terror of New England and the Bloody Belt of Pontiac and gaze upon the faces of King Philip the Wampanoag and Pontiac himself. When the Europeans first came to North America, the Native Americans already had their own disparate nations, their own distinct cultures, and their own history. This book fills in the historical narrative of the Native Americans from 1644 to the Battle of the Little Bighorn in 1876 and the death of Sitting Bull in 1890, a history that is often overlooked and marginalized by modern textbooks.

BUMPER THE WHITE RABBIT IN THE WOODS – Book 2 in the Bumper the White Rabbit Series

This is the sequel to ?Bumper the White Rabbit? and, like vol. 1, contains 15 more stories and adventures of Bumper the White Rabbit.Bumper had many friends, such as Mr. Blind Rabbit, Fuzzy Wuzz and Goggle Eyes, his country cousins; and Bobby Gray Squirrel had his near cousins, Stripe the chipmunk and Webb the flying squirrel; while Buster and White Tail were favoured with an endless number of friends and relatives. If we turned them all loose from the books, and put them in a ten-acre lot?but no, ten acres wouldn?t be big enough to accommodate them, perhaps not even a hundred acres. The stories and adventures of Bumper in this volume are as follows, and the title of each adventure will tell you what you can expect in this volume. I.????????? Bumper Hunts with the Pack II.???????? Bumper?s Ignorance Excites Suspicion III.?????? Bumper Saves Fuzzy Wuzz from Snake IV.?????? Spotted Tail Shows Enmity V.??????? A Test of Fleetness VI.?????? A Test of Courage VII.????? A Test of Wits VIII.???? Spotted Tail Stirs up Revolt IX.?????? The Work of Shrike the Butcher Bird X.???????? Rusty Warns Bumper XI.?????? The Rabbits Rise Against Bumper XII.????? Spotted Tail Receives his Punishment XIII.???? Bumper Wins Spotted Tail?s Friendship XIV.???? Spotted Tail Proves His Loyalty XV.????? Bumper Makes Fuzzy Wuzz Queen This volume is sure to keep you and your young ones enchanted for hours, if not because of the quantity, then their quality. They will have you coming back for more time and again. All boys and girls who love reading and who love animals should become acquainted with Bumper the white rabbit, with Bobby Gray Squirrel, with Buster the Bear, and with White Tail the deer, for they are all brave and fearless in danger, and so lovable that you won?t lay down any one of the books without saying wistfully, ?I almost wish I had them really and truly as friends and not just storybook acquaintances.? That, of course, is a splendid wish; but none of us could afford to have a big menagerie of wild animals, for that?s just what you would have to do if you brought the books to life. ============ KEYWORDS/TAGS: Bumper, White Rabbit, fairy tales, folklore, myths, legends, children?s stories, childrens stories, bygone era, fairydom, fairy kingdom, ethereal, fairy land, classic stories, children?s bedtime stories, happy place, happiness, laughter, forest, woodland, Hunt, Pack, Ignorance, Excite, Suspicion, Save, Fuzzy Wuzz, Snake, Spotted Tail, Enmity, hostility, antagonism, Test, Fleetness, speed, Courage, Wits, Spotted Tail, ferment, Revolt, Work, Shrike, Butcher Bird, Rusty, Warn, Rise up, Against, Receive, Punishment, Win, Friendship, Prove, Loyalty, Queen Rabbit, childrens books

Cremation of the Dead, Its History and Bearings Upon Public Health (Illustrated)

Cremation of the dead is neither new in theory nor in practice. In the England of modern times, however, the question has only recently assumed recognised importance. And the more one considers cremation, the more one finds himself wondering how it has come to pass that we practise burial, with its many faults, and do not burn our dead. Thousands amongst us are now beginning to feel thankful that the dead are soon to 'rule our spirits from their urns' in a realistic and not alone in a poetical sense. They think there is something majestic and even pleasurable in the idea that it will ere long be possible, on all civilised shores, to leave their mother earth, not with a partial, but with a fully consummated sacrifice upon her altar, bidding her adieu none the worse, but rather the better, for their sojourn with her. They groan[2] and labour under the burden of enforced burial, and 'hail with satisfaction and joy the prospect that a chariot of fire may receive them instead of the cold and darksome grave.'

Famous Men of the Middle Ages

The story of the Middle Ages is told through the lives of such men as Attila the Hun, Charlemagne, William the Conqueror, Edward the Black Prince, and Joan of Arc. Games and Songs of American Children

Children's games are among the most interesting social phenomena. Their inventiveness and variety are overwhelming, and their durability is uncanny. Some children's games still current today were played when Rome was young. Minor details may change, the words of the jingles change, but the games remain basically the same from one generation to the next. Also, children's games reflect with great accuracy both current and past situations, providing a good index to the folkways of a certain time and place. This book is the pioneer study in American children's games. It contains scores of games that the author collected throughout the eastern half of the United States around the turn of the century. It is the basic book in the field, for much of the material has disappeared since Newell collected it. Of course this book can never be superseded, since this particular moment in time is gone and cannot be retrieved.Newell, who was one of America's foremost folklorists, has described the procedure of the games, and quoted collected texts of the songs in full, with the music for them in many cases. He also provides comparative material demonstrating the kinship between the game under discussion and similar games from other cultures. Over 100 games are given here under various functional categories: guessing games, games of chase, ball games, knife games, and many others. The book has great value for modern readers. It is also an important document for the folklorist, since most of this material is not obtainable elsewhere. It is valuable to historians as a source of information on popular culture. It is useful to parents, teachers, and any others who may want suggestions for games and entertainments for children. And for the general reader it will bring back many a golden memory of the days when he, too, played "London Bridge is falling down."

How to Amuse Yourself and Others: The American Girls Handy Book

Explore, hike, discover, be crafty and have fun with friends or alone, indoors or outside! Written for children in 1893, and valuable for both kids and adults today, here's a magical cornucopia of projects, devices, toys, gifts, dolls, recipes, decorations, perfumes, wax and clay modeling, oil and water-color painting and games, all with clear and practical directions for how to make and play them. Vintage Americana by the Beard sisters, two of the founders of the girls scouting movement (when they weren't campaigning for women's rights). As Anne M. Boylan writes in her foreword, "Healthy and spirited, [the American Girl] thinks nothing of taking a ten-mile 'romp' through woods and fields with a group of friends, and collects flowers and leaves for preservation or presentation to friends and relations. Above all, however, the Beards' girl is handy. She can make a hat rack, a screen, or a bookshelf; fashion a macrame hammock or a cornhusk doll; and draw, paint, sculpt, or decorate a room...By emphasizing what girls can do, The American Girl's Handy Book presents a portrait of girlhood that is vigorous, active, and full of possibilities."

He did not remonstrate, however, for it had been the custom of generations for at least one son of each Douglas family to preach the gospel of Calvinism, and his father's career as an architect and landscape gardener had not left him much capital.

Selected Mathematical Works: Symbolic Logic + the Game of Logic + Feeding the Mind: By Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, Alias Lewis Carroll

This carefully crafted ebook: ?Selected Mathematical Works: Symbolic Logic + The Game of Logic + Feeding the Mind? is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents. Lewis Carroll wrote several mathematics books. He was mainly interested in using logic diagrams as a pedagogical tool. Symbolic Logic, first published in 1896, contains literally dozens of puzzles. He believed heartily that children would enjoy learning mathematics if they could be enticed by amusing stories and puzzles. The Game of Logic, published in 1897, was intended to teach logic to children. His "game" consisted of a card with two diagrams, together with a set of counters, five grey and four red. The two diagrams were Carroll's version of a two-set and a three-set Venn diagram. A manuscript of a brief lecture Lewis Carroll once gave, Feeding the Mind, discusses the importance of not only feeding the body, but also the mind. Carroll wittily puts forth connections between the diet of the body and mind, and gives helpful tips on how to best digest knowledge in the brain. This essay was originally printed in 1907. Lewis Carroll ((1832-1898) is best known as the author of Alice in Wonderland and Alice Through the Looking Glass. His real name was Charles Dodgson. His father, the Reverend Charles Dodgson, instilled in his son a love of mathematics from an early age. Lewis studied at Oxford, and later taught there as a Mathematics Lecturer.
