This is not a story of the war, but a story growing out of the war, for the young British engineer officer, Brandon, was dismissed from the army because he lost plans and was unable to explain the loss without involving, as he supposed, a girl whom he admired. The engineer and girl meet again in South America, where most of the events of the story take place.

Born in New York capital, Albany, Charles King (October 12, 1844 - March 17, 1933) was the son of Civil War general Rufus King, grandson of Columbia University president Charles King, and great grandson of Rufus King, who was one the signers of the United States Constitution on September 17, 1787, in Philadelphia. He graduated from West Point in 1866 and served in the Army during the Indian Wars under George Crook. He was wounded in the arm and head during the Battle of Sunset Pass forcing his retirement from the regular army as a captain in 1879.

The Cadets of Flemming Hall (Illustrated Edition)
Anna Chapin Ray (1865-1945) was an American author born in Westfield, Massachusetts, who in 1881 was one of the first three women to take the Yale University entrance exam. She studied at Smith College in Northampton, Mass. where she received a BA in 1885 and an MA in modern European history in 1888. Her writing career began the following year and she went on to become a prolific author, primarily of children's books although she did also write some adult novels. Many of her works were written under the pseudonym Sidney Howard. It became her practice to write during the summer in New Haven, Connecticut and then spend the winter months in Quebec. This story for boys set at a cadet school was first published in 1892. With three illustrations.
