Chicago, Satan’s Sanctum
Chicago has long had a reputation as being a rough-and-tumble metropolis full of shady characters and run by politicians of dubious moral character. This hard-hitting true-crime expose indicates that the city was already earning its notoriety in the late nineteenth century. Author L. O. Curon spins a page-turning account of Chicago's gritty, crime-ridden streets.

Freaks of Mayfair, The
This antiquarian volume contains E. F. Benson's series of hysterically dry, fictional sketches of high society in Mayfair. The society about which the author writes is one that he knew very well, and each denizen that he illustrates characterises a distinct anthropological type. From Lady Mary, who practices snobbery as an art form, to Mr. Sandow, a socialite vicar interested in everything but spirituality, this masterful piece of satire will appeal to those who enjoy literature of this ilk, and makes for a great addition to any collection. The chapters of this book include: The Compleat Snobs, Aunt Georgie, Quack-Quack, The Sea-Green Incorruptible, The Eternally Uncompromised, The Grizzly Kittens, The Horizontal, The Perpendicular, Pastor, Sing for your Dinner, The Praisers of Past Time, etcetera. We are republishing this vintage book now complete with a specially commissioned new biography of the author.
Human Nature and Conduct – an Introduction to Social Psychology
This early work is John Dewey?s 1922 treatise, ?Human nature and conduct; an introduction to social psychology?. It is a fascinating and in-depth exploration of habit and its importance in the understanding of social psychology. This volume is highly recommended for students of psychology and sociology, and would make for a worthy addition to collections of allied literature. Contents include: ?The Place of Habit in Conduct?, ?The Place of Impulse in Conduct?, ?The Place of Intelligence in Conduct?, and ?Conclusion?. John Dewey (1859?1952) was an American psychologist and philosopher. Many classic books such as this are becoming increasingly rare and expensive. We are republishing this volume now in an affordable, modern, high-quality edition complete with a specially commissioned new biography of the author.
Kinship and Social Organisation
First published in 1914, W. H. R. Rivers' hugely influential study was the first to effectively demonstrate the close connection between methods of denoting relationship or kinship and forms of social organisation, including those based on different forms of the institution of marriage. He also shows that the terminology of relationship has been rigorously determined by social conditions and that, therefore, systems of relationship furnish us with a most valuable instrument in studying the history of social institutions. This series of lectures was orginally delivered by the author in May 1914, at the London School of Economics. They are based on the experiences of the Percy Sladen Trust Expedition to Melanesia in 1908.
Legends of the City of Mexico
These legends of the City of Mexico are of my finding, not of my making. They are genuine folk-stories. Each one of them is a true folk-growth from some obscure curious or tragical ancient matter that, taking hold upon the popular imagination, has had built up from it among the people a story satisfying to the popular heart. Many of them simply are historical traditions gone wrong: being rooted in substantial facts which have been disguised by the fanciful additions, or distorted by the sheer perversions, of successive generations of narrators through the passing centuries. Others of them have for their kernel some unaccounted-for strange happening that, appealing to the popular mind for an explanation, has been explained variously by various imaginative people of varying degrees of perception and of intelligence: whose diverse elucidations of the same mystery eventually have been patched together into a single story-that betrays its composite origin by the inconsistencies and the discrepancies in which it abounds
The Descent of Man – and Selection in Relation to Sex
First published in 1871, ?The Descent of Man, and Selection in Relation to Sex? is a book by English naturalist Charles Darwin.
