Kesari – Sangli Edition

The Kesari newspaper is a Marathi-language Indian newspaper. The newspaper was initially founded in 1881 by a prominent personality of the Indian Independence Movement, Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak, in the city of Pune in Maharashtra. Founded to provide a platform for expression in India?s struggle for freedom, the paper is still published today by the Kesari Maratha Trust and Deepak Tilak, the grandson of Bal Gangadhar Tilak. The Kesari newspaper was originally started as a co-operative effort by Agarkar (the paper?s first editor), Chiplunkar and Tilak, and was published along with Tilak?s English newspaper, the Mahratta, to encourage people to rise against the oppressive regime of the time, instead of being submissive. The paper was even prosecuted in 1897 for its bold reporting. Known for its high quality of reporting through its long history, the Kesari is still published from the original offices in Pune. Reporting local, national and international news, the paper today is still one of the leading dailies of Maharashtra. Respected for its rich history and crucial role in shaping and reporting events in Indian history, the Kesari newspaper enjoys a wide circulation and readership all across the country. This is further cemented by the Kesari e-paper, which serves as both a historical archive and a newspaper. Apart from this, the Kesari also publishes an online Marathi periodical called The Daily Kesari, edited by Deepak Tilak. Read less
