'The Angel and the Author and Others' is a collection of short stories, including 'Literature and the Middle Classes', 'Man and His Master', 'If Only We Had Not Lost Our Tails!', and many more. Jerome Klapka Jerome was born in Walsall, England in 1859. Both his parents died while he was in his early teens, and he was forced to quit school to support himself. In 1889, Jerome published his most successful and best-remembered work, 'Three Men in a Boat'. Featuring himself and two of his friends encountering humorous situations while floating down the Thames in a small boat, the book was an instant success, and has never been out of print. In fact, its popularity was such that the number of registered Thames boats went up fifty percent in the year following its publication.

Antic Hay takes place in London, and depicts the aimless or self-absorbed cultural elite in the sad and turbulent times following the end of World War I. The story follows one Theodore Gumbril in his invention of Gumbril's Patent Small-Clothes, trousers which contain a pneumatic cushion in the seat. Gumbril's quest for love occasionally makes him resort to utilizing "The Complete Man" which is a disguise he concocts around a false full beard. He relates to a diverse cast of characters in bohemian, artistic and intellectual circles. Everybody is lost but at the same time looking for happiness while everything is going out of control in a ridiculous and comic way.

After a few years of marriage his wife began to suffer from depression and over the years became detached from reality.
