Sermons for the Christian Year
"Sermons for the Christian Year" is a selection of sermons by John Keble, a friend and colleague of Newman and an influential figure in the Oxford Movement that rediscovered the Catholic roots of Anglicanism. The sermons, all preached after 1836, when Keble retired from the academic life of Oxford to pastoral work in the country parish of Hursley in Hampshire, span the liturgical year. Most importantly, they are marked by the acute pastoral sense that made Keble beloved and influential in his own day and by his passionate desire that the simplest members of his parish embrace in full the life of Christian holiness. The introductory essay by Maria Poggi Johnson sets the sermons in the context of Keblebs career and the history of Victorian religion and outlines the main themes of Keblebs thought and suggests some ways in which the sermons are relevant to the contemporary Christian or student of religion.
Siddhartha
The classic novel of a quest for knowledge that has delighted, inspired, and influenced generations of readers, writers, and thinkers.Nominated as one of America?s best-loved novels by PBS?s?The Great American ReadThough set in a place and time far removed from the Germany of 1922, the year of the book?s debut, the novel is infused with the sensibilities of Hermann Hesse?s time, synthesizing disparate philosophies?Eastern religions, Jungian archetypes, Western individualism?into a unique vision of life as expressed through one man?s search for meaning. It is the story of the quest of Siddhartha, a wealthy Indian Brahmin who casts off a life of privilege and comfort to seek spiritual fulfillment and wisdom. On his journey, Siddhartha encounters wandering ascetics, Buddhist monks, and successful merchants, as well as a courtesan named Kamala and a simple ferryman who has attained enlightenment. Traveling among these people and experiencing life?s vital passages?love, work, friendship, and fatherhood?Siddhartha discovers that true knowledge is guided from within. Susan Bernofsky?s magnificent translation brings out Hesse?s inspired lyricism and his elegant, melodious cadences, illuminating the novel?s universal themes and timeless wisdom about the human condition. This original Modern Library edition includes a lively new Introduction by Tom Robbins and a glossary of Indian terms.
Stepping Heavenward
"Stepping Heavenward" by Elizabeth Prentiss (first published in 1869), tells the story of Kate and her quest to live a better life. By watching her godly mother (with whom she becomes easily irritated at times), Kate learns about striving for excellence. A no-nonsense approach to Christian living, "Stepping Heavenward" employs good humor, all the while leading the reader to ponder deeper, eternal matters. The diary of Kate reveals innocence coupled with an acute awareness of her naturally human tendencies to selfishness. Through "Stepping Heavenward," we learn that small things really do matter, as Kate matures into a young woman with true depth of character. While Kate's freckle-faced candor is truly refreshing, the artfully penned expressions woven throughout "Stepping Heavenward" also provide great reading. There is humor, seriousness, and some sadness as Kate progresses through the stages of life. Through it all, author Elizabeth Prentiss displays an astounding ability to put the struggles faced by all men and women who desire to live for Christ yet are confronted by their flawed humanity, into words. "Stepping Heavenward" is an elevating, and interesting, book that both mothers and daughters will enjoy. - Amazon

The Soul of a Bishop
The Bishop of Princhester has come to doubt the Trinity, as well as a number of other things relating to the Creed. Not only this, but he has come to realise that there are others within the church with doubts-some who even doubt the existence of God. Although the Bishop believes fervently in God, his disagreements with the dogma, creating an inner turmoil that throws his life into chaos. Herbert George Wells (1866 - 1946) was a prolific English writer who wrote in a variety of genres, including the novel, politics, history, and social commentary. "The Father of Science Fiction" was also a staunch socialist, and his later works are increasingly political and didactic. Today, he is perhaps best remembered for his contributions to the science fiction genre thanks to such novels as "The Time Machine" (1895), "The Invisible Man" (1897), and "The War of the Worlds" (1898). Many vintage books such as this are becoming increasingly scarce and expensive. We are republishing this book now in an affordable, modern, high-quality edition complete with a specially commissioned new biography of the author. This book was first published in 1923.
