Tumkur , now known as Tumakuru is the headquarters of Tumkur district . Positioned in the eastern part of Karnataka in south India , Tumkur is an industrial town that is fast growing into a big city . On the occasion of Suvarna Karnataka , Tumkur was renamed as Tumakuru . It is believed that the name Tumkur possibly originated from ‘TUMBE UURU’ due to the abundance of a kind of flower called ‘TUMBE HUUVU’ .

Tumkur occupies an area of 10,598 kilometre square and had a population of 25,84,711 of which 19.6% were urban as of 2001 . It is a one and a half hour drive [70 km] from Bangalore , the capital of Karnataka . Tumkur is also known as ‘Shaikshanika Nagari’ [City of Education] and ‘Kalpatharu Nadu’ [Land of Coconut trees] . Tumkur is famous for Shree Siddaganga Mutt , known for providing free education and dorms for more than 9000 children . Karnataka Rathna Late Shree Shree Shivakumara Swamiji was the president of this mutt Tumkur has many other educational institutions . It has Tumkur University , 2 medical colleges , 5 engineering colleges , 38 degree and postgraduate colleges , a dental college and many polytechnics , high schools and primary schools .

Tumkur is also famous for its temples , monuments and forts such as Goravanahalli Lakshmi Temple , Chenna Keshava temple , Devarayana Durga , Pavgada fort , alaguppe etc . It is said that Tumkur was the town where Lord Ram and Sita rested during their journey back from Lanka . The Shivaganga Hills , a famous tourist spot is just a few kilometers away from Tumkur city . It is a very popular rest stop among the people on religious pilgrimage . It is one of the most renowned tourist destinations in Karnataka with many different adventurous activities such as trekking on steep inclines , boating etc .

Since 28 August 2010 , Tumkur has been accorded the status of City Corporation . Tumkur hosts India’s first mega food park . The Indian Food Park was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in September 201.4 .

Tumkur district’s economy is majorly derived from agriculture . Plantation crops such as coconut , areca nut , paddy cultivation attribute in its economy . The industries also increase the economy of the city . The Indian Budget for year 2014-2015 announced that Tumkur is one of the cities in karnataka to be developed as an ‘Industrial Smart City’ . The city also got selected as one among the 100 in the country shortlisted for the Smart City project . Tumkur also has other programmes such as Tumakuru Digital Library etc , which are helping Tumkur to develop in a digital manner . Thus in 5 years , Tumkur will be developed as a Smart City using the amount of 1000 crores sanctioned by the government .
