Sandburrs (Classic Reprint)

Excerpt from Sandburrs A sandburr is a foolish, small vegetable, irritating and grievously useless. Therefore this volume of sketches is named sandburrs. Some folk there be who apologize for the birth of a book. There's scant propriety of it. A book is but a legless, dormant creature. The public has but to let it alone to be safe. And a book, withal! Is its own punishment. Is it a bad book? The author loses. Is it very bad? The publisher loses. In any case the public is preserved. For all of which there will be no apology for sand burrs. Nor will I tell what I think of it. No; this volume may make its own running, without the handi cap of my apology, or the hamstringing of my eriti cism. There should be more than one to do the latter with the least of luck. The Bowery dialect - if it be a dialect - employed in sundry of these sketches is not an exalted literature. The stories told are true, however; so much may they have defence. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Man of the Forest

The Man of the Forest combines many of the elements that have drawn millions of readers to Zane Grey's work for nearly a century -- plucky heroines, gorgeous descriptions of landscape, a gruff but brave and virtuous protagonist, and of course, a thrilling action-adventure plot. When long-time solitary man Milt Dale stumbles across news that a kidnapping is being planned, he takes it upon himself to protect the sisters targeted by the nefarious scheme -- and finds love in the process.

The Phantom Town Mystery

A whirl of gleaming sand and dust on a cross desert road in Arizona. The four galloping objects turned off the road, horses rearing, riders laughing; the two Eastern girls flushed, excited; the pale college student exultant; the cowboy guide enjoying their pleasure. A warm, sage-scented wind carried the cloud of dust away from them down into the valley. "That was glorious sport, wasn't it, Mary?" Dora Bellman's olive-tinted face was glowing joyfully. "Wouldn't our equestrian teacher back in Sunnybank Seminary be properly proud of us?" Lovely Mary Moore, delicately fashioned, fair as her friend was dark, nodded beamingly, too out of breath for the moment to speak. Jerry Newcomb in his picturesque cowboy garb, blue handkerchief knotted about his neck, looked admiringly at the smaller girl. "I reckon you two'll want to ride in the rodeo. I never saw Easterners get saddle-broke on cow ponies as quick as you have." Then his gray eyes smiled at the other boy, tall, thin, pale, who was wiping dust from his shell-rimmed glasses. "Dick Farley, I reckon you've ridden before."
