Almost A Man And Almost A Woman This book is a result of an effort made by us towards making a contribution to the preservation and repair of original classic literature. In an attempt to preserve, improve and recreate the original content, we have worked towards: 1. Type-setting & Reformatting: The complete work has been re-designed via professional layout, formatting and type-setting tools to re-create the same edition with rich typography, graphics, high quality images, and table elements, giving our readers the feel of holding a 'fresh and newly' reprinted and/or revised edition, as opposed to other scanned & printed (Optical Character Recognition - OCR) reproductions. 2. Correction of imperfections: As the work was re-created from the scratch, therefore, it was vetted to rectify certain conventional norms with regard to typographical mistakes, hyphenations, punctuations, blurred images, missing content/pages, and/or other related subject matters, upon our consideration. Every attempt was made to rectify the imperfections related to omitted constructs in the original edition via other references. However, a few of such imperfections which could not be rectified due to intentionalunintentional omission of content in the original edition, were inherited and preserved from the original work to maintain the authenticity and construct, relevant to the work. We believe that this work holds historical, cultural and/or intellectual importance in the literary works community, therefore despite the oddities, we accounted the work for print as a part of our continuing effort towards preservation of literary work and our contribution towards the development of the society as a whole, driven by our beliefs. Theodore Leighton Pennell (1867-1912) was a doctor and Christian missionary. He spent much of his time living with various tribes of Afghanistan and Pakistan, where he founded a missionary hospital. He was awarded the Kaisar-i-Hind Medal for Public Service in India. This fascinating volume is a record of his life's work beginning with his moving to Bannu in 1893 to introduce the gospel to those travelling in and out of Afghanistan. Ceremonies of the Pomo Indians and Pomo Bear Doctors 1917
1917. These essays were originally published by the University of California Publications in American Archeology and Ethnology. During a residence in the Pomo region the existing vestiges of some of these Pomo ceremonies were observed whenever possible. Some information was obtained from informants of three Pomo dialects, Northern, Central and Eastern. In Ceremonies, Mr. Barrett presents information relative to the ceremonial organization, ghost or devil ceremony, Guksu ceremony, dances and the Messiah Cult. I have in all instances given his own language, and faithfully recorded his story as he told it, without any change whatever. The subject of this story is well known to the author, who for a long time brake unto him "the bread of life," as a brother in Christ, and beloved for the Redeemer's sake. There are also persons yet living, whom I have seen and known, who witnessed many of Peter's most awful sufferings. The subject, and the author, have but one object in view in bringing the book before the public: ,a mutual desire to contribute as far as they can, to the freedom of enchained millions for whom Christ died. And if any heart may be made to feel one emotion of benevolence, and lift up a more earnest cry to God for the suffering slave; if one generous impulse may be awakened in a slaveholder's bosom towards his fellow traveller to God's bar, whose crime is, in being "born with a skin not coloured like his own;" and if it may inspire in the youthful mind, the spirit of that sweet verse, consecrated by the hallowed associations of a New-England home, "I was not born a little slave To labour in the sun, And wish I were but in my grave, And all my labor done." it will not be in vain. First published in 1919, Dr. Elsie Inglis-by English suffragist LADY FRANCES BALFOUR (1858-1930)-was the definitive biography, based on first-hand sources, of the pioneering physician. Born in India to progressive parents, Inglis was educated at the Edinburgh School of Medicine for Women, which opened in 1886. She encountered sexism throughout her life and fought against the prevailing assumptions that women unfit to be doctors and that women's ailments could most easily be solved by relaxation on a couch. Among her many trailblazing accomplishments, she established hospitals in Russia, Serbia, and France for victims of the First World War. Garden Party and Other Stories – the Original Classic Edition, The
If youve never read her short stories (she never wrote anything else), please do, and then read her journal. There is really something incredible thats underneath the surface of her short stories. If you just looked at the surface you might think they were cutesy or affected (little girls figure largely), but you would be completely missing the point. Its hard to explain whats so moving about them. When she describes some lazy afternoon, she just gets it so right that all the vast range of human experience seems to be contained in this afternoon (whereas in any Great American Novel-esque tomes you read only a fraction of that experience is ever expressed). But at the same time, it was just this cute little vignette that had very satisfying descriptions of flowers and little girls playing. The journal will help you understand her sadness as its expressed in her work. You know when you are very, very upset, and you see something so beautiful or even funny, youre likely to become on the verge of tears? Thats how Mansfield sounds in her stories - the stories are that beautiful thing that she sees. She is most often compared to Chekhov, and its not difficult to see why. I truly believe that Mansfield innovated and practically invented the English (language) short story.

Glimpse at Guatemala, and Some Notes on the Ancient Monuments of Central America, A
Alfred Percival Maudslay (1850-1931) was a British colonial administrator and archaeologist who is widely considered the founder of modern Mesoamerican archaeology. After graduating from Trinity Hall, Cambridge, in 1872 Maudslay made his first visit to Guatemala before becoming a colonial administrator working in Trinidad and Fiji. After retiring from colonial service in 1880 he returned to Guatemala and began exploring and excavating major Mayan sites including Chichen Itza, Cop?n, Palanque and Quirigu?. Maudsley pioneered scientific exploration and recording of these monuments, using techniques which later became standard. First published in 1899, this volume documents Maudslay's last expedition to Guatemala with his wife Anne Cary Maudslay, and contains detailed descriptions and plans of the archaeological sites he had excavated during his previous expeditions. An appendix contains the first excavation reports of Quirigu? and Tikal (1883) and Cop?n (1886), previously published in the Proceedings of the Royal Geographical Society.
