BlackFlash Magazine
BlackFlash Magazine is a platform for contemporary visual art.
BlackFlash is dedicated to presenting critical opinions, urgent issues, and innovative ideas about divergent artistic practices from across Canada, the United States and beyond. Each issue includes feature articles, profiles, interviews, and artist projects from a diverse selection of artists, writers, and curators. BlackFlash fosters a rich public engagement with image-based practices, such as photography and video as well as sound, performance and social practice by promoting energetic debate and showcasing diverse voices and communities (local, regional, national and international).
BlackFlash was founded in 1983 by the Saskatoon artist-run centre, The Photographer’s Gallery (TPG). We are currently working on our 38th year of publication, making us one of Canada’s longest running magazines. BlackFlash is proudly published, designed, and disseminated in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, and is an internationally recognized resource and authority on Canadian and international contemporary art.
BlackFlash was created to promote contemporary photography and over its thirty-five year history, the magazine evolved, following the artistic trajectory of photo-based practice to include artists working with new technologies such as video and digital media. In its commitment to being responsive to artists and relevant to contemporary art practice, the magazine has recently broadened its editorial mandate, while affirming its distinctive prairie perspective.
Bognor Regis Pubs
Once a small fishing hamlet, the origins of modern Bognor Regis lie in the attempt by Sir Richard Hotham to develop this part of the south coast as a fashionable resort in the late eighteenth century. Hotham?s original profession is given in the name of the town?s JD Wetherspoon outlet, the Hatter?s Inn, while the pub originally called the Railway Tavern has recently been renamed the Hothampton Arms in memory of Hotham?s preferred name for his resort. The oldest pub still trading in the town is the William Hardwicke, which was built by 1817 as the New Inn. Bognor expanded with the arrival of the railway in 1864, which led to the building of new pubs such as the Terminus and the development of those already existing such as the Alexander Tavern. David Muggleton takes us on a walking tour of this seaside town?s finest pubs, taking in the ex-Berkeley Arms, now home to the town museum; the Claremont Inn, whose interwar interior makes it a CAMRA heritage pub of some regional importance; and the Punch & Judy, originally the Orlando, but recently renamed as a reminder of the Tony Hancock film The Punch & Judy Man, filmed partly on location in the town. Well researched and beautifully illustrated, Bognor Regis Pubs provides something for everyone, whether they have lived in this venerable old seaside resort all their lives or are visiting this part of the West Sussex coast for the first time.
Creative Image
A 100-page bi-monthly art photography publication, filled with a host of features and opinion articles, on the aesthetics of photography.
Photography is one of the youngest forms of creative expression, and has seen quite a few changes in its relatively short maturing period. The purpose of Creative Image is to pick up photographs and bodies of work that are intuitive, well-explored, eloquent and offer a look inwards, as well as outwards.
The bi-monthly magazine, produced by Raghu Rai, one of India's most renowned photographers and the first Indian to become an associated of the celebrated Magnum Photos, will look at contemporary, emerging artists as well
as legendary names. Each issue will
be thematic and will largely cover work produced in the Indian subcontinent. There will also be showcases of works
by one master photographer from Asia, and one master from the West, along with conceptual, nature, landscape, abstract and experimental photographers from around the world.
