Climbing on the Himalaya and Other Mountain Ranges (Illustrated)
This is the illustrated version of Climbing on the Himalaya and Other Mountain Ranges by John Norman Collie. ?The man who ventures amongst the Himalaya in order that he may gain a thorough knowledge of them must of necessity be a mountaineer as well as a mountain traveller. He must delight not only in finding his way to the summits of the mountains, but also in the beauties of the green valleys below, in the bare hill-sides, and in the vast expanses of glaciers and snow and ice; moreover his curiosity must not be confined to the snows and the rock ridges merely as a means for exercising an abnormal craze for gymnastic performances, or he will show himself to be 'a creature physically specialised, perhaps, but intellectually maimed.'?

The Cruise of the Snark
Barely 30 years old and the wildly popular author of The Call of the Wild, Martin Eden, and other successful novels, Jack London's determined to follow the example of his boyhood idol, Herman Melville, and explore the islands of the South Pacific. Accompanied by his wife and two crew members, London set sail from San Francisco in 1906 aboard the Snark, a custom-made 55-foot ketch. With wry good humor, London recounts both the exhilaration and hardship of a two-year voyage aboard a small, leaky craft. His vital, colorful narrative carries readers along with the intrepid crew through stormy seas, illness, and navigational uncertainty. These difficulties are counterbalanced by abundant rewards, including panoramic vistas of the natural beauties of Hawaii, Bora Bora, Tahiti, the Marquesas Islands, and other exotic locales. The hospitality of the South Pacific islanders proves even more overwhelming than the scenery; everywhere the Snark ventures, its crew is greeted with feasts, celebrations, and lavish expressions of goodwill.Enhanced with 119 original photographs, this rollicking blend of excitement and adventure represents one of the most interesting and best-written narratives of a sea voyage ever written. Related in the compelling voice of a master storyteller, The Cruise of the Snark promises a memorable reading experience for armchair sailors, old salts, and any lover of nautical adventure.
The Days Before Yesterday
The French tutor selected for me enjoyed a great reputation at that time. Oddly enough, she was a woman, but it will be gathered that she was quite an exceptional woman, when I say that she had for years ruled four unruly British cubs, varying in age from seventeen to twenty, with an absolute rod of iron. Mme. Ducros was the wife of a French judge, she spoke English perfectly, and must have been in her youth a wonderfully good-looking woman. She was very tall, and still adhered to the dress and headdress of the "sixties," wearing little bunches of curls over each ear,a becoming fashion, even if rather reminiscent of a spaniel.
