Poems of Francis Thompson
During the research for her biography of Francis Thompson, Between Heaven and Charing Cross it became clear to Brigid Boardman that a new edition of his poetry was essential for a full recognition of the range and variety of his work. He remains best known for his great poem The Hound of Heaven but his work as a whole has never been properly presented. All previous editions include the many alterations and deletions that were made to Thompson?s work posthumously by Wilfrid Meynell for the edition of 1913. Meynell?s aim was to present the poetry in a strictly orthodox Catholic light in a period when fears about Modernism influenced the Church?s understanding of literature. These anxieties have not served the poetry well. Thompson?s aim was ?to be the poet of the return to God? and his work expresses the divine presence that he believed permeated all aspects of life. This edition finally restores an important English poet to the readers that he so deserves.
Religious Poems
SLOW through the solemn air, in silence sailing, Borne by mysterious angels, strong and fair, She sleeps at last, blest dreams her eyelids veiling, Above this weary world of strife and care. Lo how she passeth!?dreamy, slow, and calm: Scarce wave those broad, white wings, so silvery bright; Those cloudy robes, in star-emblazoned folding, Sweep mistily athwart the evening light. Far, far below, the dim, forsaken earth, The foes that threaten, or the friends that weep; Past, like a dream, the torture and the pain: For so He giveth his beloved sleep. The restless bosom of the surging ocean Gives back the image as the cloud floats o'er, Hushing in glassy awe his troubled motion; For one blest moment he complains no more.
Stepping Heavenward
"Stepping Heavenward" by Elizabeth Prentiss (first published in 1869), tells the story of Kate and her quest to live a better life. By watching her godly mother (with whom she becomes easily irritated at times), Kate learns about striving for excellence. A no-nonsense approach to Christian living, "Stepping Heavenward" employs good humor, all the while leading the reader to ponder deeper, eternal matters. The diary of Kate reveals innocence coupled with an acute awareness of her naturally human tendencies to selfishness. Through "Stepping Heavenward," we learn that small things really do matter, as Kate matures into a young woman with true depth of character. While Kate's freckle-faced candor is truly refreshing, the artfully penned expressions woven throughout "Stepping Heavenward" also provide great reading. There is humor, seriousness, and some sadness as Kate progresses through the stages of life. Through it all, author Elizabeth Prentiss displays an astounding ability to put the struggles faced by all men and women who desire to live for Christ yet are confronted by their flawed humanity, into words. "Stepping Heavenward" is an elevating, and interesting, book that both mothers and daughters will enjoy. - Amazon
